Funchal is just gorgeous, full stop
The Old Town is something else - cobblestone streets, painted doors, tiny restaurants tucked everywhere. The food scene alone is worth the trip. Espetada and poncha are must-tries. Weather was perfect and the people were so warm and welcoming.
Best winter sun escape we've had in years
We needed some sun in February and Funchal delivered completely. The Mercado dos Lavradores is a feast for the eyes - fresh fruit, flowers, fish, all buzzing with locals. Passionfruit from the market was incredible. Great mix of relaxation and things to actually do.
Lovely city for a walking holiday
So much to see just on foot. The botanical gardens are stunning and the levada walks nearby are genuinely impressive. Not too crowded in January which made it feel really special. Locals are friendly and prices are reasonable compared to mainland Portugal.
Madeira wine and good vibes all week
Came mostly to unwind and explore and this place totally delivered. The cable car ride up to Monte is absolutely worth it. Views are unreal. Tried Madeira wine at a local spot in Zona Velha and it was far better than anything I'd had before. Solid trip.
New Year's here is absolutely wild
The fireworks over the bay on New Year's Eve are genuinely one of the best things I've ever seen. The whole city comes alive and everyone is out celebrating together. Stayed near the seafront promenade which was perfect for watching everything. Unforgettable night.
Perfect December city break
Funchal in December is really special. Christmas decorations all over the center, mild weather, and the markets are lovely. Tried bolo de mel for the first time - that traditional molasses cake is seriously good. Great city for couples looking for something a bit different.
